Summer is definitely here now and may it last!
Why not enjoy our glorious Chiltern countryside with a fantastic weekend close to home, so no traffic jams or exhausting car journeys. So we have found a great campsite close to home yet with a totally rural feel… Chiltern Retreat – is for all those families that love nature, short journeys and most of all animals. For the Dads and boys there is clay pigeon shooting, cricket and lots of fire making.

This fantastic site offers camping in the woods surrounded by fields. You can bring your dogs and even pony and make it a fantastic weekend away for a family get together, party, kids birthday party or whatever your heart desires. We can bring and set up our beautiful Caravan which sleeps a family of 5 (including babies as the bottom bunk can be used as a secure cot) and if that’s not enough space we can hire some beautiful Tipis and Bell tents from the Sleepover Company, so everyone fits in.

Chiltern Retreat has so much to offer you, so you can camp the way you want to. Here are some ideas:

Summer is just around the corner so why not combine a weekend of wild swimming with a great camping trip?

Last summer when the sun kept shining and we were treated to the best summer in a very long time I found myself a little bit stuck as to where we could go for a swim. All the local outdoor pools were either packed or had massive queues outside which just filled me with pure horror. In the end we decided to try local streams that were safe for young children and less busy .. until I came across a fantastic wild swimming spot on Hurley Lock Island between Henley -on- Thames and Marlow.

Hurley is quite unique among locks along the River Thames, as the river splits into a number of channels.

The kids love watching the boats going through the locks and there is a sweet little tea room where you can buy sandwiches, cakes and ice creams.

We found the best spot is right at the end of the island where the ground slopes gently into the river, relatively shallow until quite far out, but beware of stronger currents coming from either side of the island. It can be a bit silty but the water quality is still good. My daughter collected lots of fresh water mussels and enjoyed swimming to the big rock.

Hurley village itself is a historic village with river parkland, wooded river islands and a 1000-year-old pub. Parking is free by the church. Just follow the footpath until you come to the bridge.

If you want a nearby campsite then I can highly recommend Hurley Riverside Park. There is a bridge from Hurley Lock Island you can cross by foot.

Hurley Riverside Park is family-friendly park which sits alongside the River Thames and is run by the same family for over 40 years.

The site has direct access to the River and the Thames Path, so is perfect for lovers of the river and walkers alike. For those with a boat or canoe there are two slipways and for those without there is a mile over river frontage for picnics. With the lush green countryside of the Thames Valley all around, red kites circling above, and the river traffic gliding it is hard to believe it is only an hour outside London.

The campsite has won the prestigious David Bellamy Gold Award for Conservation for the last 15 years and even won their rare Special Distinction Award. To teach children about the local wildlife there is also a self-guided nature trail which follows the length of the campsite.

Please note there is no restaurant onsite, only a small shop selling basic essentials, so it’s important to come well stocked up with food, drinks etc. If you do need to pop to the shops then Hurley Village has a small village shop.

When we camped here we asked for a pitch right by the playground, the kids were happy playing with their new friends and we could relax with a glass of wine and finish a conversation.
Hurley Riverside Park will offer anyone that books the Vintage Caravan Hotel 10% off their pitch fee. Just quote ‘Vintage Caravan Hotel’ when booking. To book the campsite visit

We still have some availability for this half term and the summer holidays, so book to avoid disappointment. Prices start from £275 for 3 nights.

Another great Campsite in the Chilterns

This week we would like to recommend Home Farm Camping and Caravan Site in Radnage, This is another great local, family friendly site in the Chilterns and not to far too travel.
The site offers amazing views of the surrounding hills, with good walks along the Ridgeway Path and Icknield Way. Local attractions include red kite spotting, Historic West Wycombe Village and West Wycombe’s Hell Fire Caves. Local shops and country pubs are all within easy reach. The site also offers a good base for visiting the historical city of Oxford or the River Thames at nearby Marlow and Henley-on-Thames.
If you fancy lunch or dinner then pop to the pub next door which is one of TIME OUT’s favourite pub.
You can book our Vintage Caravan Hotel, we set everything up and meet you there, so you all you have to do is turn up and relax!

New to our page is our weekly recommendation of local, family friendly campsites. We have chosen the best and we start of with Town Farm Camping in Ivinghoe.

Town Farm is a family friendly camp site with stunning views over the Vale of Aylesbury and Ivinghoe Beacon.

Town Farm is a working farm nestled at the foot of the Chiltern Hills and has been run by the Leach family since the early 1930s. About 1,000 sheep are farmed on the Beacon Hill and surrounding high ground, while the lower fields are used for crop cultivation. The `Pick Your Own` opens in June and guests can take a picnic and stock up on fruit and vegetables. The farm enjoys fantastic views of the surrounding countryside including the local landmark – Ivinghoe Beacon, which marks the start of the famous Ridgeway Walk.

The farm is close to the Grand Union Canal with the towpath and boat trips available. Town farm is within an easy trip to London by train in 50 minutes, the snow centre in Hemel Hempstead and ten minutes from Whipsnade Safari Park. Visit Warner Brothers Studios nearby and see the making of Harry Potter. There is a wealth of attractions nearby to entertain in wet and dry weather.
If you want to take it easy and enjoy the beauty of the Chiltern Hills then you are spoilt with great walking routes.
Our Vintage Caravan Hotel can be hired for this campsite and we deliver and set up. Don’t wait too long to make a booking!
